Compound Sentences dan Complex Sentences adalah dua jenis kalimat dalam bahasa Inggris yang digunakan untuk menghubungkan ide-ide yang berbeda dalam sebuah kalimat yang lebih panjang.

1. Compound Sentences

Pengertian:
Kalimat compound adalah kalimat yang menggabungkan dua klausa atau lebih yang masing-masing berdiri sendiri sebagai kalimat yang lengkap, menggunakan konjungsi koordinatif seperti for, and, nor, but, or, yet, dan so.

Struktur:

• Independent Clause + , + Coordinating Conjunction + Independent Clause
• Contoh:
  • "I wanted to go for a walk, but it started raining."
  • "She loves reading books, and she often spends hours in the library."

Penggunaan:

• Untuk menghubungkan ide-ide yang setara atau berkaitan secara logis.
  • Contoh: "He studied hard for the test, so he passed with flying colors."

2. Complex Sentences

Pengertian:
Kalimat complex adalah kalimat yang terdiri dari satu klausa utama dan satu atau lebih klausa anak yang tergantung pada klausa utama. Klausa anak biasanya dihubungkan dengan konjungsi subordinatif seperti because, although, since, while, dan if.

Struktur:

• Independent Clause + Subordinating Conjunction + Dependent Clause
• Contoh:
  • "Although it was raining, we decided to go hiking."
  • "She didn’t go to the party because she was feeling sick."

Penggunaan:

• Untuk mengungkapkan hubungan sebab-akibat, kontrastif, atau kondisi antara ide-ide.
  • Contoh: "If you study hard, you will pass the exam."

Contoh Narasi:

"Tom was excited about the weekend because he had planned several activities. He wanted to visit the new museum, but his friends also wanted to go to the park. Tom decided to compromise, so they planned to visit the museum in the morning and go to the park in the afternoon. Although it was cloudy in the morning, they enjoyed their time at the museum. After that, they went to the park, and they had a great time playing games. They were tired but happy by the end of the day. If the weather had been better, they might have spent more time outside."
